I made these photos as part of a series of portraits of blind people. My intent was to explore the intersection of blindness and photography - specifically, what photography and images mean to people who cannot see. I was also interested in learning the everyday details of life without sight - shopping, cooking, caring for children - and recorded interviews with each person I photographed. I used a 4 x 5 camera and enjoyed the slowness of it because of the natural space it created for conversation.
I found that images, as part of new thoughts and in memories, are vital. In some cases, photographs as physical objects held importance. Just knowing that a particular piece of paper had the image of a loved one on it was meaningful.
